How to play Travle

Travle is a country path game. Start in one country and reach another by naming a chain of connected neighbors. Each valid move crosses one border under this practice map’s rules. Play unlimited routes at different lengths, use a next-country hint when needed, and compare your journey with a shortest solution.

Read the start and goal

The map marks the start with S and the goal with G, with both names written above it. Search the next country from your current position. You can play the entire game through country-name search without clicking small map shapes.

Add a connected country

A country must connect to your current country under the rules below. Every accepted move adds one border crossing. Invalid or repeated countries do not advance the route. Undo removes the last country, letting you backtrack and try another branch.

Use these explicit connection rules

Most connections follow land borders between represented country units. The Denmark–Sweden fixed bridge is also allowed. Ferries and the Channel Tunnel are excluded. France–Brazil via French Guiana, Spain–Morocco via Spanish enclaves, and Canada–Denmark via Hans Island are excluded. Azerbaijan–Turkey and Russia’s Kaliningrad borders are included. These are game rules, not travel or visa advice.

Choose a route length

Easy routes take 2–3 border crossings on a shortest path, medium 4–5, and hard 6–10. Challenges are generated only for reachable pairs. Island countries with no eligible connections are not selected as unreachable targets. The map contains 177 features, but only 151 units have at least one playable connection in this version. The 26 units with no connections are not drawn as route-puzzle starts or goals. They include Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Cyprus, Northern Cyprus and Somaliland. These are limits of this practice graph, not claims about real-world borders or political status.

Daily puzzles and saved progress

Daily puzzles reset at midnight UTC and use this site’s independent version-one schedule. Switching modes keeps your current daily and practice progress separately. The game checks the UTC date while open and on returning to the page. Changing difficulty keeps a started puzzle and applies to the next puzzle. Completed daily results count once per date. Local records cover the last 50 finished puzzles and are not synced between devices.

Keyboard and touch

Focus the search field, type a name, move with the arrow keys and press Enter to submit a result. On touch devices, tap the result. The search accepts English names and aliases, Chinese names, and pinyin with or without spaces and tone marks. You can also click a country directly on the map, or open Quick countries by continent. For tiny map regions, use the search or the 44px neighbor buttons.

Map learning and recovery

Show all neighbors highlights the current country’s connections and lists unvisited next steps. Explain directions costs one hint per reveal and labels shortest next steps, longer routes and moves that would require undoing later. These labels account for countries already on your route. Dashed lines show possible crossings; the solid line shows your route. Lines are schematic, not roads.

Undo last crossing removes one step without resetting your timer or hints. With focus inside the game, Alt + Left Arrow also undoes a step. Search uses Up / Down Arrow and Enter. Current, start and goal are marked on the map and named in text.

Completion compares your crossings with a shortest route, hints used and active time. Active time counts while this game mode is open in a visible tab; background-tab and closed-page time are excluded. Older saved rounds begin timing from their first visit with this version.
